Study for: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
Charcoal pencil on cartridge paper
By Ijlal Olguner 2022
Permanent collection of St Patrick's College, Ballarat.
‘Drawing 1', is a charcoal pencil drawing, that I did during my residency at St Patrick's College in Ballarat between March and April 2022. This drawing depicts the changes that have occurred to humanity and the natural environment. Yesterday, thousands of years ago, the indigenous Australians lived peacefully, in a healthy natural environment. Today we are dealing with the pandemic and other deadly viruses. Tomorrow, shows that if we continue to pollute the natural environment, we will all be wearing respiratory devices, just to be able to breathe. This drawing strongly informed the development of my painting ‘Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow', which I executed during my residency.
In early 2022, I became the recipient of the St Patrick's College, Flanagan Artist in Residence Prize. I became the resident artist, for four weeks, at St Patrick's College in Ballarat. During my residency there, I developed drawings and a major painting for the permanent collection of the college. I also worked closely and collaborated with the senior studio arts students of the college.
